The Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games is a multinational, multi-sport event held every four years; it involves the elite athletes of the 71 Commonwealth nations. Attendance at the Commonwealth Games is typically around 5000 athletes. The CIOC has sponsored teams to compete in the 1978, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010 Games in the sports of Boxing, Athletics, Cycling, Shooting, Karate, Rugby, Swimming, Tennis, Triathlon, Sailing and Squash. Kareem Streete-Thompson made Cayman proud at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games by winning a Bronze medal in the men’s long jump.

For the sport of squash – Every participating country has been allowed to send a maximum of 8 players, 4 male and 4 female, for this event. Competition events include men’s and women’s individual, men and women’s doubles and mix doubles.

The Pan American Games

The Pan Am Games are a multi-sport sporting festival held every four years between competitors from all 42 nations of the Americas. The CIOC has sponsored athletes to compete in the 1979, 1983, 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007 Games in the sports of Athletics, Cycling, Shooting, Karate, Swimming, Tennis, Triathlon, and Squash. Kareem Streete- Thompson won a silver medal in the Men’s Long Jimp in Winnipeg in 1999 and Cydonie Mothersill won a silver medal in the Women’s 200M in the Pan Am Games in the Dominican Republic. Shaune Fraser made Cayman proud at the 2007 Pan Am Games winning a silver medal in the 200M freestyle, Caymans first Pan Am swimming medal.



Island Games

The Friendly Games
The Island Games are games that invite only small island communities with populations of 120,000 or less. The games are held every other year, and now include 14 different sports and 25 Islands. The Cayman Islands first competed in Island Games in Gotland, Sweden in 1999, taking Cayman’s largest multi-sport team of 150+ athletes and team officials placing 6th in the medal count. To date the Cayman Islands has competed in the 1999,2001,2003,2005, 2007 and 2011 Games taking up to 11 different sports. More than 600 athletes and team officials have participated in previous games bring home 121 medals from all 5 games combined.
