2012 Women’s and Men’s National Squash Championships
This edition of the national squash championships was again hosted at the South Sound Squash Club. Over 50 competitors were trying to become Cayman Islands best in squash for 2012. On paper, with a few noted absences from last years draw, it was wide open for two new champions to be crowned.
In the Men’s +50 category, Nick Buckley defeated Guy Harvey in 5 games after taking out Greg Richmond Peck in the semi finals. Ray Farrington finished 3rd with his first time entery into the vets +50 category.
In the Men’s +40, familiar faces returned to try and stop last years winner Frank Brennan from repeating his title however they all fell shy in both the round robin and match playoffs. Frank won both without dropping a game defeating Paul Johnson in the semis and Warren Urquhart in the finals.
In the Men and Women’s National Championships two new faces appeared on the podium for 2012. First in the Men’s Open, resident squash professional, Mark Chaloner wins his first Cayman Islands title defeating Julian Jervis in the final. Yes, Julian Jervis, age 14, with a key win in the quarter finals (11-9 in the fifth game) over his doubles partner, Myron Blair appeared in his first senior national squash final. Julian out gunned by Mark gave his best performance and with his recent under 15 national junior title finishes off on a high for the 2012 season. Rounding off the top five finishers were David Finch 3rd, Gabe Rabess 4th, and Myron Blair 5th.
Similar story for the Women’s Open title, Eilidh Bridgeman, after winning her last junior national title a week before became the first women in recent performances to win both the junior and senior national women’s title in the same year. Eilidh won the final over Janet Sairsingh after defeating junior rival Lara Conolly in the semis without dropping a game in the 3 matches. Rounding off the top finishers were Tanja Ebanks 4th, and Julie Corsetti defeating Sheena Conolly to win the consolation.
National Squash Champions – Mark Chaloner and Eilidh Bridgeman
In the two Doubles events, the B Doubles Championship went to the 2 junior team of Eilidh Bridgeman and Lara Conolly outlasting three other teams including the finalist Derek Tyler and his daughter Cathryn Hindess 3-1 in their round robin play.
In the Open Doubles event, the win went to the team of Mark Chaloner and national squash coach Glenn Stark. Both Mark and Glenn especially Glenn had their hands full in the final by a very determined team of Myron Blair and Julian Jervis. The game plan was obvious and straight forward with both teams….”play all balls away from Mark (ranked top ten in doubles in the world) and return all the balls back to Julian’s side”. With the first game lasting 42 minutes, the cracks started to appear in the team of Blair and Jervis and not able to run or hide further failed to get a game off of the eventual winners losing 3- 0.
